Description:
Labels is an initiative about dealing with identity in a globalising world.
The project brings together performance art, story telling, new media and sustainable livelihood issues.
Background:
Labels was begun in the aftermath of the genocide of 2002 in Gujarat, India, in order to address the Indian State's commitment to diversity and plurality, and the failure of secularism in India. This project was begun by an artist but has a larger goal of empowerment for oppressed identities in India and everywhere in the world.
Objectives:
The aims of this project are
a.rebuilding the mindscape for diversity.
b.addressing and coping with histories of oppression that are hinged on one's identity.
c.Carving out initiatives to channelise the project's ideals into workable models for knowledge resource developement, education, and sustainable livelihoods in the Indian subcontinent.
d.Working globally to build and foster paradigms for understanding and living with religion and identity.
Milestones:
Labels is structured at various levels, since this is primarily an art based paradigm. The Initiatory rite, 'Identify Yourself' was done in two locations in India, one in Gujarat at Raheema's studio and online at a mailing list, and the other in Banglore at the College of Fine Art.

The project works with narratives of oppression, drawing them out into performative acts and performances employing the use of movement, live performance, sound and video projection.
The first narrative is that of Raheema's, who plays Screen Sifar, the Abominable Eagle. Her first performance marked five years after the genocide of Muslims in Gujarat, since the project is about coming out and affirming one's identity.
